Lots of hugs and stories at Newport kindness event

“You’re here, I’m here, we’re all here tonight to celebrate kindness,” said Dianne Rochford at the second annual Signs of Kindness event. Held on Tuesday, Oct. 16, the event brought more than 50 people together on the Newport Common to celebrate the many small kindnesses that “bind us together and make us neighbors in a friendly community.”

Three-school Co-Op is sought at KRHS for girls ice hockey

By the time ice hockey season arrives, Kearsarge girls could be playing with and against other girls rather than with the boys. The Kearsarge Regional School District (KRSD) School Board voted to allow a three-school cooperative agreement during its Sept. 6 meeting.

Got Lunch Newport helps fight student hunger in summer

Students returned to school last week, and some did so on fuller stomachs than last year thanks to a volunteer-run program dedicated to fighting summer hunger. This summer, Got Lunch Newport delivered groceries to 66 children in 29 families over 11 weeks.

Kearsarge teachers are energized, excited for new school year to begin

“I feel more excited and energized for the year to begin maybe than I have ever felt,” said Beth Perkins, fifth grade teacher, during the Kearsarge Regional School District School Board meeting on Thursday. Perkins also said many her colleagues feel the same. Her praise sprung from several days of meetings between staff and faculty in preparation for the new school year.

Documentary brings world issue to Newport

At the midpoint of Seeing Through the Wall: Meeting Ourselves in Palestine and Israel, an Israeli father whose child died in the ongoing conflicts tells a group of American tourists something. It is a message that he has made his life’s work to spread. “We are not doomed, we can break this endless cycle of violence,” he says, “and the only way to do it is simply by talking to each other.” And on July 26 at the Library Arts Center (LAC), a group of people took time out of their week to do just that.

And for Laurie Schive and Mike Morgan, bread holds the potential to breathe life into a town. Party celebrates fostering joys despite strained system

The Division for Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) celebrated local foster parents and the difference they make in children’s lives on Saturday by hosting a fun party for their families. The get-together, which featured bounce houses and a performance by magician Dylan Tenney, is an annual tradition. This year’s event took place at the Newport Recreation Center.

Conservation easement approved after modification by N.L. Selectmen

The New London Board of Selectmen made good on a warrant article approved by voters in March by signing an easement drafted by the Conservation Commission after making minor modifications to the document’s language at their last meeting.

Mount Royal football and baseball Knights may be turning into Cougars

The Kearsarge Regional School District (KRSD) School Board voted to allow cooperative sports teams with Mount Royal Academy during its Feb. 22 meeting. The agreement will allow Mount Royal to send students to KRSD to play on sports teams that the Sunapee private school does not offer.

When Bill Bartlett drove into Newport after crossing the finish line of the Iditarod in 1980, a big sign greeted him on Main Street. It read, “Welcome home, musher Bill.” “That was the greatest sense of accomplishment,” said Bartlett. “I have no words.”

Ever since she participated in the Winter Carnival Queen as princess in second grade, Alia Gonzales looked forward to someday being a contestant. That day came Friday evening, Feb. 9, when Gonzales not only participated in the competition, but also was also crowned queen of the 102nd Newport Winter Carnival.
